Bruce Straley behind a legendary franchise is making a new venture with a fresh title. His new project, named Coven of the Chicken Foot, signifies the debut from his new team, Wildflower Interactive, and it will build on the legacy he helped create prioritizing reactive companion characters. A Witch, A Creature, and A New Kind of Adventure Revealed at the 2025 Game Awards, Coven of the Chicken Foot is pitched as a character-puzzle-platformer. The game follows a seasoned spellcaster, a character who challenges traditional video game heroics. The core idea originated in an interest in re-examining what it means to be a protagonist. "Imagine if you didn’t have combat prowess? What if your character was not built for battle? An aging witch, for instance?" asked the director. "The concept seemed deeply interesting to explore the definition of a protagonist. Being a hero means overcoming problems, but also encompasses selflessness and unwavering will." A Living, Learning Partner Inspired by Past Work While the game appears distinct at first glance, its groundbreaking system is a direct continuation the technology developed for The Last of Us. The entire project flowed from a key thought: "How could one create a companion character truly living and learning in response to the user?" The companion creature in the game isn’t an average NPC. Straley describes it as a learning entity that reacts through a multi-phase process. To begin with, it explores with wonder, which can cause playful hijinks. Subsequently, it moves into a mimicry phase. Ultimately, it watches and learns to learn how things work. To illustrate: If the creature sees an object being placed, it grasps the physical act but not the reason. This leads it to start picking up nearby items to see where they go, copying the action. The 'why' is learned solely through accidental success an obstacle, teaching through experience. A Personal, Player-Driven Narrative This complex system aims to foster individualized narrative moments. Straley stresses that Coven of the Chicken Foot functions as a contemplative journey of exploration as opposed to a traditionally structured narrative. "Each effort to insert rigid narrative turns within this framework, the excitement fell apart," Straley explained. "The true vitality in this partnership is that you as a player are going to have unique moments and stories compared to my playthrough." This focus on emergent, character-driven storytelling, Coven of the Chicken Foot signifies simultaneously a refinement and a bold new direction from the creator's iconic past work. This adventure is currently being built for computer systems.
