Extreme heat and raging wildfires have swept through the parched landscape of Western Australia. With temperatures forecast to persist soaring above 40C (104F) over the next few days, a severe heatwave warning has been issued across a large portion of the southwestern region.

Broad Heatwave Alerts Across the Region

These conditions follow recent fires in another state, which resulted in the destruction of properties and loss of life. Severe heatwave warnings have additionally been issued for later this week in parts of South Australia and NSW, as a system of high pressure moves to the east, bringing blazing sunshine to much of the region.

The mix of tinder-dry vegetation and unbroken high temperatures creates a volatile scenario for emergency crews.

Worldwide Climatic Events Cause Chaos

In another part of the world, a metropolis was left in blackout recently after powerful gusts damaged the city’s power grid, with toppled trees bringing down electricity cables. The weather conditions also led to major transport delays at a major airport, where numerous flights were grounded. Substantial impact on electrical infrastructure is anticipated to cause ongoing issues as service providers scramble to reconnect electricity to over 1 million residents.

Atypical Mist Covers Sunny Area

At the same time, a valley famed for its sunny weather and plentiful sunlight has endured one of its grayest and most overcast periods on recorded history. A specific type of low cloud, which usually lingers for only a short time, has been remarkably extensive and persistent this year, holding the mercury at a major airport below 8C for over a week – the most prolonged period in over three decades. The prolonged haze has been driven by exceptional fall precipitation that resulted in soils waterlogged.

Severe Weather Brings Snow to Tourist Destination

Turning to another country, a weather system has ushered in heavy rain, powerful winds and even snowfall to a set of islands – conditions many would not associate with this favored tourist spot. While wintry precipitation is not unheard of at higher ground, the storm delivered some of the heaviest accumulations since 2016 to a national park, compelling its closure.

Alongside the snowfall, fierce winds from the north buffeted the island chain, with wind gusts reaching 50mph recorded on multiple islands. The influence of the storm is expected to diminish this week with more seasonal conditions returning.
