The offspring of ex- South African Leader Zuma has entered a not guilty plea to terrorism-related accusations at the commencement of her trial in the harbor city of the city of Durban.

Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla, forty-three, is being charged over comments she made on social media four years ago during violent protests in South Africa that occurred subsequent to the arrest of her father.

A week of disorder in multiple regions of the country in July 2021, including theft and intentional burning, resulted in at least 300 individuals dead and led to damage worth an estimated $2.8 billion (2.2 billion pounds).

Zuma-Sambudla has been alleged of fuelling this turmoil and faces allegations of incitement to commit terror-related activities and public disorder.

Background of the Proceedings

The unrest were concentrated in the regions of Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal province and came after the ex-leader's detention for defying a judicial ruling to appear as a witness at an investigation into claims of corruption while he was holding office.

The defendant has always refuted the accusations against her, with her lawyer in the past calling the prosecution's legal argument as weak.

She has also repeatedly stated the allegations against her were an bid to settle political grievances with her parent after he founded his own political party and competed against the African National Congress.

Endorsement and Court Representation

This was supported by the Jacob Zuma foundation, which stated the legal matter was an "misuse of authority" and a "coordinated attempt" of "politically motivated and family-related targeting" against the former president and his family.

A handful of followers from her group, her party, gathered outside the provincial high court, while her parent and other group representatives participated in the court sessions inside.

Her legal team has stated that the testimony presented by the state is unconvincing and does not have concrete proof for a criminal finding.

Main Aspects of the Trial

  • Digital posts from the past form the basis of the state's argument
  • Violent protests in 2021 resulted in substantial deaths and economic destruction
  • The accused faces multiple counts of incitement to violence
  • Judicial hearings are expected to carry on for several court sessions

The legal proceedings continues as the prosecution and defense present their evidence before the judge in what is projected to be a highly monitored court case with major politically charged consequences for South Africa.
