LeBron James is sidelined for approximately a month and is confirmed to miss the beginning of the basketball season with sciatic nerve pain, LA Lakers announced.

James, 40, inked a fresh deal with the Los Angeles Lakers in June of this year and is set to become the first athlete to compete across 23 individual campaigns.

Sciatic pain refers to discomfort in the sciatic nerve that goes down the lower back and down the leg.

The athlete was absent in pre-season and missed the games against the Golden State and the Phoenix recently because of the glute nerve irritation.

The American is expected to be sidelined for all five of the team's games in the month of October, featuring the opening match against Golden State.

LeBron James, the highest points scorer in history, has not missed before the opening of the campaign in his 22-season tenure.

The number of 1,562 regular-season appearances is merely 50 less than overtaking former Boston star Robert Parish's league record.

The champion featured in seventy of the LA Lakers' 82 games last term and played on 71 matches in the year before.

In the most recent campaign, James averaged 24.4 points per game, more than 8 assists and nearly 8 rebounds per game and came in sixth in the MVP vote.

Los Angeles Lakers qualified for the postseason in last season but lost four games to one against the Timberwolves in the initial stage.
