The NWSL has announced a major new rule created to enable its clubs to battle on the worldwide stage for elite athletes. Dubbed the "High-Impact Athlete Rule," this measure permits teams to exceed the league's salary cap by as much as $1 million expressly to lure and retain high-profile players.

Aimed at Keeping Key Assets

One candidate could benefit from this fresh regulation is Spirit forward Trinity Rodman. The explosive young star has allegedly received substantial overtures from overseas teams, putting strain on the NWSL to provide a competitive economic package to keep her talents in the US.

"Making sure our teams can compete for the finest players in the world is vital to the ongoing expansion of our association," remarked NWSL Commissioner Jessica Berman. "This High-Impact Athlete Rule enables teams to spend strategically in top talent, bolsters our ability to keep star players, and shows our commitment to building first-rate lineups."

In monetary terms, the initiative is estimated to raise overall spending by as much as $16 million in 2026, with a cumulative boost of approximately $115 million over the term of the existing labor deal.

Union Opposition

Nevertheless, the plan has not been broadly accepted. The NWSL Players Association has expressed significant resistance, stating that such alterations to salary systems are a "mandatory topic of bargaining" under US employment law and must not be enacted by the league alone.

Rule Mechanics
