The English seamer further complicated the injury concerns plaguing England when he left the ground on the second morning of the Boxing Day Test against Australia. The pace bowler felt a problem in his left hamstring post-delivery that he bowled at the MCG. The touring camp reported the 27-year-old had experienced "tightness" and required time off the field for further assessment "in the coming hours". The concluding match of the series in Sydney starts this coming Sunday. England have previously lost fast bowlers one seamer to a knee injury and Jofra Archer with an abdominal strain during this series. A replacement bowler was called up as injury reinforcement. His form was underwhelming in the opening two Tests, claiming a mere a handful of scalps. He was dropped from the previous Test, then recalled for the Boxing Day match in the playing XI. Atkinson improved at the MCG, bagging two scalps in Australia's first innings, then making 28 while batting among just a trio of England players who passed ten runs. After bowling one over at the end of day one, he returned on Saturday morning and dismissed the nightwatchman edging to the keeper. Unfortunately, at the end of that over, he delivered a change of pace to the batsman and promptly felt at his leg. Atkinson returned to the side for the fourth Ashes Test following his omission the previous Test.
