SNAP Payments Set to Expire for Over 40 Million Throughout Continuing US Government Shutdown

USDA officials declared recently that SNAP funds from a major federal welfare initiatives are not going out during the coming month due to the ongoing government funding lapse.

Closure Continues For Nearly Four Weeks

The funding lapse was in three and a half weeks at the time of the statement, which followed calls from over 200 Democratic representatives asking the department to access contingency funds to pay for the upcoming nutrition payments.

“Bottom line, resources are exhausted,” the department confirmed. “Now, there will be no benefits issued” starting next month.

Widespread Impact

Tens of millions of people rely on these monthly payments, according to the USDA. Some regions, including one southwestern state, dependence on this assistance affects a significant portion of citizens.

Documents reviewed by journalists showed that the department decided against using emergency reserves for the upcoming payments.

Partisan Impasse

Republicans and Democrats continue to disagree over how to finance and restart government operations.

Comments by the director at the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities suggested that federal leadership had chances to act sooner to avoid interruption in payments.

“Officials were able and expected to made moves before now to get ready to access these resources,” the comments added. “Rather, officials could opt out in an effort to gain political advantage” as Republicans seek to pressure Senate Democrats to vote for a spending bill that would reopen government operations.

Local Responses

Governors in two affected states declared states of emergency recently to make money available to combat potential hunger preparing for nutrition assistance payments stopping during the upcoming period.
