The British driver Lando Norris Secures First F1 World Championship in Yas Marina In Spite Of Verstappen's Grand Prix Victory.

In a display of gutsy driving, Lando Norris has sealed his maiden F1 world title by securing P3 at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Third place was all that was required for the 26-year-old driver, even though his rival Max Verstappen won the race and his teammate at McLaren Oscar Piastri came home in second.

The driver performed precisely what was needed in an enormously intense battle at the Yas Marina Circuit, including a number of bold overtakes, with impeccable execution from both himself and his team.

An Important Feat for British Motorsport and The Team

By winning his maiden world championship, Norris becomes the eleventh driver from Britain to achieve this. It also brings to an end the team's drivers’ championship wait, which dated back to 2008 when Lewis Hamilton was their last champion. Additionally, it had been 27 years since McLaren last secured the championship double back in 1998.

This marks a remarkable resurgence for the team, from a low point in the middle of the last decade when they twice finished ninth in the constructors’ championship. The comeback has been led by team principal Zak Brown and, more recently, by Andrea Stella, who has built an well-drilled team with a very fast car.

A Tale of Two McLaren

For his teammate Oscar Piastri, who had been the favorite for a large part of the campaign, there was obvious frustration at stumbling in the final third. A series of difficult weekends and mistakes, such as crashing out in Baku, were expensive. Nevertheless, he finishes the season having demonstrated he is too of champion caliber. Being so fast in only his third year in F1, with multiple victories, remains very impressive.

Max Verstappen was also brilliant to force the fight down to the last race. He did everything possible in Abu Dhabi with the win, but after fighting back from a significant deficit in August, he did not quite have the points to catch Norris, ending up just a handful of points short.

Sealing the Deal with Ruthless Execution

He secured his title with ruthless focus to win the crown that had been so close but eluded him as McLaren found themselves floundering at the previous two rounds. First a DSQ in Las Vegas and then an egregious strategy call in Qatar.

It was a significant accomplishment for the 26-year-old in his seventh year in F1, each one with McLaren. He remained loyal to the team even during tough times, believing they would return to the top. That belief was rewarded in Abu Dhabi.

He has done a hugely impressive job to persist with his goal, maintaining his cool and confidence during periods under the cosh. After losing the championship lead to Piastri after Saudi Arabia, he nonetheless worked at getting the most from what he could.

The Title-Deciding Grand Prix

At the start, Verstappen kept his lead through turn one, but the three title leaders avoided contact. Piastri, using the hard tyre, was feisty and made a spectacular move to go round the outside of Norris to take second place.

This demonstrated the McLarens were allowed to fight, but put Norris under threat from the Charles Leclerc. The first round pit stops saw Norris emerge in traffic, but he passed rivals within a lap and displayed great composure in his driving.

On lap 19, he made an incredibly bold move to dive past two cars at once, moving up to fourth and catching Verstappen's teammate. Red Bull instructed their driver to delay Norris, which resulted in a breathtaking overtaking attempt where Norris went up the inside, almost completely off the track.

This moment was investigated by the stewards, with several impossibly tense laps passing before a time penalty for his rival and no further action for Norris settled the matter. This bold move unimpeded was crucial to his title fight.

Diverging Fortunes

As Norris became the first Briton to take the title since Lewis Hamilton in 2020, the contrast in fortunes between the two was stark. As the young guns fought for the title, Hamilton, the veteran, could manage only eighth place in Abu Dhabi, a disappointing ending to a difficult season with Ferrari.

Making his debut with the Italian team had been greeted with enthusiasm but has yielded what was comfortably his most challenging year ever, ending up sixth in the championship and failing to secure a podium. He has appeared jaded in the closing races and will look to rebuild over the off-season.
