The Reze Arc Movie Tops the U.S. Cinema Earnings in First Weekend

Has Sony repeated their success? Coming after the success of Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle, which brought in over $600 million worldwide, the latest Chainsaw Man film has officially crossed the hundred-million-dollar mark globally, reaching a international earnings of over $108 million in its opening frame. The film outperformed the horror sequel Black Phone 2 ($12.9M) in its second week in movie houses, as well as the music documentary Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere starring the talented Jeremy Allen White ($9M).

Impressive American and Worldwide Earnings

Directed by director Tatsuya Yoshihara, the feature is a straightforward follow-up of the debut season of the Chainsaw Man series. It brought in over $18 million domestically after a strong $5.2M Saturday and four-point-five-million-dollar Sunday performance. Overseas, the animated by MAPPA feature earned nearly $15 million across 46 global regions, pushing its worldwide total to over $60 million through Sony distribution (over $43 million overseas, $18.2M domestic). The studio has not yet revealed its complete box office tally.

Comparisons to Previous Successful Anime Films

Promotional firm an industry expert had earlier commented, drawing parallels between the film’s projected performance to the popular film Jujutsu Kaisen 0, which earned $34 million in the domestic market in 2022 and debuted with a comparable $18 million in the U.S.. The new film's debut weekend matches that standard, while its hundred-and-eight-million-dollar global gross currently tracks a bit short of the earlier film's over $166 million overall box office. Although it’s unlikely this Chainsaw Man film will achieve the numbers of mega hit the record-breaking Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle, this is still a significant success for the studio.

Fan Engagement Efforts Fuel Success

Sony and its subsidiary the anime streaming service Crunchyroll have skillfully used fan engagement to propel their leadership at the anime box office. The movie's marketing campaign began at Anime Expo Los Angeles in summer with a MAPPA presentation, unique experiences, and Pochita photo ops, followed by a significant involvement at NYCC featuring exclusive clips, lotteries for fans, and further MAPPA discussions. There was even an private showing for enthusiasts for general audiences and influencers alike after the final day of the event.

Looking Ahead

This year marks a big year for Japanese animation, and for the company, which has another animated movie releasing in the coming months in the upcoming Jujutsu Kaisen: Execution in November.
